World Aids Day Celebration, Upington

World AIDS day in Upington

World AIDS Day is celebrated on 1st December every year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died from the disease. The Northern Cape Provincial Government (NCPG) celebrated this day with the community of Upington, where government departments joined arms and handed out food parcels to the underprivileged.

Acting Head of Department (HOD) for The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDaT), Mr Mabilo, together with the HOD for Provincial Treasury, Mr Mabija, donated 10 food parcels to four (4) communities namely, Grootdrink, Melkstroom, Ntsikelelo and Carpe Diem. Among the recipients of the food parcels was Anna* an HIV patient, who lives with her brother in shack, with no running water and no toilet. She cannot apply for a social grant because she does not have an Identity Document(I)D. The officials from DEDaT liaised with the Department of Social Development to help address challenges such as South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) registrations, ID applications to name a few.

The NCPG will continue to participate in such initiatives with the aim of improving lives and helping those in need.
