The Department of Economic Development, under the Integrated Economic Development Services (IEDS), in collaboration with the Township Economy Expo 2025 (TEX), successfully hosted the second annual Township Economy Expo. The two-day event, held from the 27th to the 28th of February 2025 at the TBG in Galeshewe, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including prominent corporate partners such as MTN and FNB, to explore opportunities for economic growth and transformation within township communities.
The expo served as a vital platform for fostering collaboration and business development, aiming to showcase the enormous potential within South Africa's township economies. The event featured a variety of activities, including exhibitions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, all focused on boosting entrepreneurship, innovation, and access to resources in townships.
Over the two days, participants had the opportunity to engage with stakeholders from various sectors, including finance, telecommunications, technology, and government. MTN, one of the event’s key partners, highlighted the role of digital transformation in empowering township businesses, while FNB showcased innovative financial solutions tailored to the unique needs of local entrepreneurs.
“The partnership between government, corporates, and township communities is essential for sustainable economic growth,” said Mr. D. Christians, Chief Director for IEDS. “The presence of companies like MTN and FNB demonstrates the commitment to developing inclusive economic solutions that can directly benefit township entrepreneurs and foster long-term prosperity.”
The event’s diverse range of exhibitors included local small businesses, tech startups, and service providers, all of whom were eager to connect with potential investors and partners. The expo’s interactive sessions provided valuable insights into emerging trends, funding opportunities, and the power of digital connectivity, which has become increasingly important for businesses to thrive in the modern economy.
In addition to business-focused discussions, the event also focused on skills development and creating sustainable business models for township economies. Keynote speakers included industry leaders who shared their experiences on how businesses can scale and innovate to meet the demands of today’s fast-evolving market.
One of the highlights of the expo was the interactive workshops, where entrepreneurs were able to pitch their business ideas to potential investors and industry experts. This platform gave township-based businesses the chance to secure funding and valuable mentorship, accelerating their growth and impact within their communities.
“This is a crucial moment for township economies,” said an FNB representative. “By providing tailored financial services and collaborating with stakeholders, we can help unlock the potential of township businesses and contribute to the broader economic development of the country.”
The Township Economy Expo 2025 concluded with a renewed sense of optimism, as stakeholders walked away with new ideas, collaborations, and resources to continue advancing economic opportunities in their communities. The event not only showcased the growth of township economies but also underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in driving meaningful change.
