The Northern Cape Consumer Protection Authority has been actively promoting consumer rights in the build-up to World Consumer Rights Day, celebrated on March 14, 2025. Through shop inspections, educational awareness campaigns, and a multi-disciplinary compliance initiative, the authority has displayed its commitment to ensuring fair and just trading between consumers and suppliers.
Leading up to the celebration, the Consumer Protection Authority visited various towns, conducting shop inspections and educational awareness sessions to ensure businesses comply with consumer protection laws.
The team engaged with local businesses and consumers, educating them on their rights and responsibilities to foster transparent and fair-trade practices.
On the 13th of March 2025, A multi-disciplinary task team consisting of the Consumer Protection Authority, SAPS, Environmental Health Practitioner, the Traffic Department, and the Immigration Office conducted compliance inspections. Ten shops were inspected, three were closed, and expired and counterfeit goods were removed from shelves to safeguard consumer well-being.
On March 14, 2025, the Consumer Protection Authority officially celebrated World Consumer Rights Day in Calvinia, bringing together key stakeholders such as SASSA, Legal Aid, Home Affairs, and Social Development. The event provided a platform for residents to gain valuable insights into their rights and the expectations placed upon them as consumers. This initiative aimed to create a more informed community that can actively demand fair and ethical trade practices.
The Consumer Protection Authority remains steadfast in its mission to protect consumers from unfair trade practices and enhance business compliance with consumer laws.
