In just 5 days after the MEC responsible for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Martha Bartlett, tabled her departmental budget speech for 2014/15 financial year, she vowed to tackle on the escalating number of road carnages happening daily on our provincial roads.

“As the MEC responsible for Transport and Safety in our Province, I will not and cannot fold arms, because I know that the most difficult task in this portfolio would be to attend memorial services of those who have lost their lives through road carnages, while we all know and agree that road accidents are preventable, but they continue to occur at an alarming rate of unnecessary overtaking at wrong areas, driving under the influence of liquor, exceeding the speed limit, overloads of public transport vehicles.” MEC Bartlett raising her concern.

This comes after an alleged reported incident that happened on the N12 in the early hours of Saturday, where a truck and a car collided between the Kalahari Lodge and claimed two lives.

“As the provincial government, we remain committed to ensuring that we prevent further road deaths on our roads, that is why we continue with our 365 days awareness campaign and we strongly appeal to motorists to be on their best behaviour to avoid loss of life on our roads.” MEC said

The MEC also urge all traffic officers to show no mercy to motorists especially on our provincial roads, and those using our roads being fully aware of the fact that they have outstanding fines and warrants, must be brought to book, I urge all motorists to settle those outstanding fines and warrants now to avoid inconveniencies during roadblock operations which speaks to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020.

Our heartfelt condolences to those that passed on during this horrific incident, including those of the Van Wyk‘s family and a speedy recovery to the injured.
