The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Mac Jack, has hugely welcomed the breakthrough made by the law enforcement agencies on the successful arrest of the axe killer suspect (John langeveldt) over this past weekend. The suspect remained at large after being alleged to have hacked two of his family members to death and also injuring her grandmother during the same incident last month (March). This story at the time caused fear and shockwaves within the Douglas community as the suspect remained at large.

The arrest of the suspect comes just two weeks after MEC Mac Jack visited the Douglas as part of restoring calm and urging the community members to work together with the police in search of the axe killer.

“We wish to commend the man and woman in blue for the swift arrest of the suspect, and the role played by the CPF, Siyancuma Municipality and Neighbourhood Watch structures in ensuring that members of the community must not take the law into their own hands”, MEC Mac Jack said.

"However, we should unite in action against such crimes and intensify our efforts to liberate our communities on the escalating spate of recent killing of woman, children and the elderly.” MEC Jack emphasised.

Perpetrators of gender based crime, particularly violence against woman, children and the elderly should have no place in society, said MEC Jack in calling for no bail on the arrested suspect.

MEC Mac Jack urge community members to peacefully picket outside the court where the suspect is expected to appear in support for no bail ruling, despite the suspect’s medical condition and call for a high sentence to be imposed as a deterrent for potential killers.

MEC Jack said his Department would keep an eye on the proceedings of this case after the suspect was charged today.
