Regions of the Northern Cape

The Northern Cape has five administrative districts comprising Pixley Ka Seme , with its district capital in De Aar; Frances Baard with its capital in Kimberley; Siyanda, which includes large sections of the Kalahari desert, has its capital in Upington; the Namaqua region, known for its minerals and seasonal flowers, has Springbok as its capital; John Taolo Gaetsewe which is a cross-border area with the North West Province, has Kuruman as its capital.

Frances Baard
This area, formerly known as the Diamond Fields, hosts the famous city of Kimberley and its diamonds. Kimberley, like Mafikeng, was also the site of a prolonged siege during the South African War (Anglo-Boer War). The British Army struggled for four months to capture the town from a makeshift Boer army. Other famous battle sites include Modderrivier and the Orange River station some 120 west of Kimberley. Places of interest include The Oppenheimer Memorial Gardens, the Pioneers of Aviation Memorial, Cecil John Rhodes' statue, the Nooitgedacht Glacial Pavements near the Barkley West diamond digging area.

Pixley ka Seme
The semi-arid Pixley Ka Seme region comes alive with abundant flowers at the first sign of the summer rains. This area has a wealth of historical artefacts relating to the South African War of 1879. It is also the site of South Africa's first diamond find which precipitated the diamond rush. The region is sprinkled with little hamlets and dorpies which have their origins in the diamond diggings and rich farmland especially for merino and fat tailed sheep. Colesberg is an important stopover for travelers to and from the hinterland to the coast on the east and south. Renowned towns and places of interest include Hopetown, Hanover and Richmond the Van der Kloof Dam, the Rolfontein and Doornkloof Natures Reserves.

Namaqua
The Namaqua region is known more for its extravagant perennial Spring flower display between August and October of each year. It currently is one of only six world plant sites namely the Cape Floral Kingdom. However, scattered communities of indigenous Khomani-San have made their home in parts of vast Kalahari desert which stretches into the area from the north-east as well as from Botswana and Namibia. The area also has rich mineral deposits of diamonds and other precious stones.

Siyanda
Formerly known as The Lower Orange, this region is a rich farmland area. It is traversed by the Orange River from the east to its west. Along its banks a welter of vineyards and domestic food farms have found a nourishing establishment. The capital Upington serves as both an administrative and commercial centre as well as a stopover into the area's hinterland by nature loving travelers. Upington is also a gateway into the southern reaches of the sub-Sahara envelopingNamibia, Botswana and Angola further north.

John Taolo Gaetsewe
The John Taolo Gaetsewe is a region of dramatic contrasts, a land where stretched-out semi-desert dunes meet up with vineyards and farmlands. A flourishing green valley marks the path that the Orange River cuts through the Northern Cape where farmers and, in particular, winemakers have learnt to use every precious drop of water wisely. The John Taolo Gaetsewei region borders on both Botswana and the North West Province, with Kuruman as the main town. The Augrabies Falls National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (a combined conservation project between South Africa and Botswana), where thousands of animals have found sanctuary, are undoubtedly the two jewels of the region.
