Modern, Growing, Successful Province

De Aar

De Aar derives its name from farmers who settled in the area in 1838. It became a municipality in 1902. It is known as the second largest railway hub in southern Africa. It is well known for the indigenous paintings etched on hard rock by the San people who roamed the area prior to the arrival of Europeans.

It is also the site of a battle between the Fingo and Zulu peoples which took place in 1883. It became an important staging post for Boer General Christian De Wet during the South African war (Anglo-Boer War). It hosts many graves of the British and Boer soldiers. South African writer Olive Schreiner lived in this town from 1902 to 1906.
