Message of condolences for !Xun Community leader

The Premier of the Northern Cape, Ms Sylvia Lucas, on behalf of the Provincial Government, wishes to express shock and sadness on the passing of a dear friend, community leader and activist of note. On Saturday, 12 May 2018, the Premier received the news of the passing of Reverend Kapilolo Mario Mahongo who was the traditional leader of the South African !Xun community in the Northern Cape. Reverend  Mahongo was also the chair of the !Xun Council of Elders, chair of the South African San Institute and vice-chair of the South African San Council. He was a carrier of the San’s oral tradition, a veteran performer of traditional stories and co-founder of the Manyeka Arts Trust.

Upon receiving the news of the tragic passing of Reverend Mahongo, the Premier dispatched the MEC for Agriculture, Mr Norman Shushu and Ministerial Staff in the Premiers Office to convey her condolences and to provide support to the family and the community. The Provincial government shares in their loss and mourning and will provide further assistance to the family. Details will be made available once the family have met and discussed their preparations for the burial.

The passing of Reverend Mahongo, who was an outstanding leader, is a great loss to the people of Platfontein and the Northern Cape Province as a whole. His contribution to improving the lives of the San community will be remembered and will form part of the rich legacy he leaves behind.
