Department of Sport,Arts and Culture: Opening of Community Libraries PDF Print E-mail

The Premier of the Northern Cape , Ms Sylvia Lucas and the  MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba will be opening the Mosweu Piet Melamu (Logaganeng) and Ester Molete (Churchhill) community libraries in the Johan Taolo Gaetsewe District on the 24 and 25 January 2018 respectively. They form part of Northern Cape Government’s initiative to provide new community library infrastructure for communities. The project which will be launched under a theme “Reading to move South Africa forward” is aimed at building a reading nation and to provide information service responsive to the needs of the community. The opening of the libraries forms part of the Department of Sport , Arts and Culture programme to honour the former President of the Republic of South Africa as part of the centenary celebrations of Nelson Mandela . There could be no better tribute or celebration of President Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela’s legacy that respond to a call for the people of South Africa to educate themselves. Madiba believed that education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.

The libraries are learning institutions which is an ideal for which Utata Nelson Mandela lived for and therefore they are being opened to honour.

Government is committed to transforming urban and rural community infrastructure facilities and services through the support of the Libraries Conditional Grant. Community libraries are increasingly becoming centres of culture where people connect and share information and access learning platforms. Community Librarians become the custodians of these important strategic impact initiatives.
