Six of the 16 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the Province have recovered.

MORE than 130 000 people have been screened for Covid-19 in the Northern Cape.

This is according to the MEC for Health, Mase Manopole, who also welcomed the announcement of six recoveries from the 16 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the Province.

Manopole was speaking during an interview with the SABC in Kimberley, as part of providing an update on the mass screening and testing campaign, ahead of her scheduled visit to Tsantsabane Municipality on Friday.

During the interview, Manopole urged communities to avail themselves for screening to determine their eligibility to test for Covid-19.

While 130 000 people in the Northern Cape have been screened for the virus, it is not certain how many actual tests have been conducted in the Province, which continues to have the lowest number of positive cases in the country.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), the latest statistics, released on Thursday, showed that the number of tests conducted nationally was 95 060.
By Thursday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa was 2 605.
Meanwhile, members of the Northern Cape provincial government visited Postmasburg on Friday to embark on a social relief programme in partnership with Kumba Iron Ore.

The mining company donated masks, gloves and medical equipment, including oxygen masks, respirators, and ventilators, and will also establish a quarantine facility and isolation site that will serve the greater Tsantsabane municipal area.

Accompanying the Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul, on the visit were the MECs for Social Development and Roads and Public Works, Barbara Bartlett and Abraham Vosloo, as well as the mayor of Tsantsabane Municipality, Mpho Mashila. Also in attendance was the CEO of Kumba Iron Ore, Themba Mkhwanazi, the CEO of the Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust, Vusani Malie, and senior officials from Kumba.

The premier and his delegation used the opportunity to also distribute food packages to the communities of Groenwater, Boichoko, Jenn Haven, Maramane and Postdene and visit the district hospital and proposed quarantine and isolation sites.
They also engaged in an awareness campaign on Covid-19, its risks and preventative measures.

During the visit, Saul welcomed the initiative by Kumba Iron Ore, pointing out that it will go a long way in helping the Northern Cape provincial government with the mammoth task of containing the spread of Covid-19.

Saul called on communities to co-operate with the government by being responsible and observing all lockdown protocols to help flatten the curve of the coronavirus.
