HONOURING MADIBA: COGHSTA OFFCIALS MARK MANDELA MONTH WITH COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY OUTREACH

As part of the annual Nelson Mandela Month commemorations, officials from the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) took to various communities across the Northern Cape to share acts of kindness that reflect the values of uTata Nelson Mandela compassion, dignity, and service.

Serving the Homeless in Frances Baard

At the Frances Baard Regional Office, officials marked Mandela Day by preparing and distributing warm soup and bread to homeless individuals in the area. This simple yet powerful act offered more than just a meal, it was a moment of human connection and comfort for those often overlooked. Smiles, gratitude, and heartfelt thanks were shared among those who received the meal, reminding all present of the impact of small acts of kindness.

Supporting People Living with Disabilities in Namakwa

In Steinkopf, the Namakwa Regional Office, led by Acting Regional Director Ms. Mpho Mothelesi, visited the Immanuel Home, a facility dedicated to supporting people living with disabilities. To honour Mandela’s legacy, officials delivered dignity packs containing essential items, offering practical support and reaffirming their commitment to inclusion and care for the vulnerable.

Giving Back in Greater Number Two

The Cooperative Governance directorate also joined the month-long campaign by visiting the Kulanahina Inclusive Day Care Centre, a registered NPO in the Greater Number Two area. The centre, under the leadership of Ms. Eilen Vingwane, cares for vulnerable children living with disabilities. The team handed over food, blankets, and heating supplies essential items especially during the winter season helping to ensure the children’s well-being and warmth.

A Warm Return to Bophelong Child Care Centre

In a deeply meaningful gesture, officials from the Office of the MEC and the Human Settlements Directorate visited the Bophelong Child Care Centre in Beaconsfield for the first time in over 10 years. The visit was not only a tribute to Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy but also a heartfelt effort to reconnect with the children and caregivers at the centre. Donations included groceries, soft drinks, toiletries, blankets, and even an electricity token to help power the centre. Officials spent their symbolic 67 minutes engaging with the children, bringing joy and warmth to a cold winter’s day.

These acts, though diverse in location and nature, carried one unified message: that the spirit of Ubuntu and service is alive and thriving in the Northern Cape. COGHSTA is proud to be part of a modern, growing, and successful province, where officials not only govern but care.
