International Tourist Guides Day Celebration

The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism was proud to announce its celebration of the 2024 International Tourist Guides’ Day, held on March 7th in Kimberley. This event, observed globally on February 21st each year, served to recognize the invaluable contributions of tourist guides to the tourism industry and local communities.

Themed "Tourist Guides - Our Guardians in Promoting and Encouraging Green Tourism," that year's celebration underscored the crucial role that tourist guides played in environmental preservation and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices. The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, in collaboration with the Department of Road and Public Works, Sol Plaatje Municipality, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Land Reform, Northern Cape Urban TVET College, and McGregor Museum, was committed to honouring this theme through various initiatives.

On March 7th, the city of Kimberley came alive with the spirit of International Tourist Guides' Day, as people gathered to pay tribute to those who played a crucial role in shaping the tourism industry and creating memorable experiences for visitors. It was a day to reflect on the importance of green tourism, sustainability, and the preservation of natural and cultural resources for future generations to enjoy

Our celebration kicked off with a series of clean-up activities at various tourist attraction sites in the Kimberley area. This was our commitment to fostering sustainable tourism practices and keeping our beloved destinations pristine for future generations to enjoy.

“In the realm of tourism, the significance of tourist guides in safeguarding museums and heritage sites cannot be overstated. Beyond their role as storytellers, they serve as custodians of knowledge, educators, and vigilant stewards of preservation. Their efforts not only enhance the tourism experience but also ensure the long-term sustainability of our cultural heritage. Tourist guides are the unsung heroes who bridge the gap between past and present, preserving the legacy of civilizations for generations to come” said Mr. Ratha Timothy, Manager, Ngwao Boswa Ya Kapa Bokone (Provincial Heritage Resource Authority).

The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism was proud to have led the charge in celebrating International Tourist Guides' Day 2024 and looked back on a successful and impactful event that inspired and empowered tourist guides to continue their vital work in promoting responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
