Bio

Yonela Mahamba holds an MSc in Zoology with a specialization in marine ecology from Walter Sisulu University and has over five years of experience in marine biodiversity research and conservation. She currently works as a Senior Technical Officer for Marine Protected Areas at the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), Oceans and Coasts. In this role, she supports the department in effective management of established marine protected areas, monitor and evaluate project activities such as development of management plans for both offshore and coastal MPAs, facilitates stakeholder engagements, and supports the implementation of international commitments, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Her interest is in marine conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources.
