Kuruman

Kuruman lies in an area rich with pre-historic artefacts which indicate habitation by earlier hunter-gatherer beings roamed the area. Several fossilised tools, rock engravings are found in the area at places such as Ga-Mohana, Grootfontein, Wonderwerk, Tsing, Branksea, Batlharos, Nchwaneng, and Maropeng.

 

 


The famous paleoanthropological find, the Taung skull (Australopithecus Africanus) was discovered a mere 130 km from Kuruman. The oldest archaeological sites in South Africa, dating from 1940, are located in the Kuruman district. The town is renowned as the habitation in Africa of the Scottish missionary Robert Moffat and his wife Mary who settled in the area around 1821-1870 and proselytised to the indigenous San and Batswana communities.
