Freedom Day, 27 April 2014 commemorates the first democratic elections held in South Africa on this day in 1994.

On Freedom Day, the country celebrates the achievements that have been made in entrenching democracy and creating a better place to live in.

 This year, Freedom Day will be celebrated under the theme: “South Africa: A better place to live in”. The main event will be held at the Union Buildings: Pretoria on 27 April 2014, followed by the 16th National Order Ceremony.
