The Premier of the Northern Cape, Ms Sylvia Lucas, is deeply saddened and disturbed by the news of the brutal and senseless murder and alleged rape of the five-year old girl in Galeshewe.

What is more heart wrenching is that this barbaric and inhumane act comes at a time when we are calling on communities to support the bid of Government of no violence against women and children. We get the impression that criminals are showing a clear act of defiance against campaigns of this nature because there is often a spike in violent acts against women and children during this time. For this reason we wish to say to them that their reign of terror will not last any longer as the law agencies are hard at work to remove from the streets anyone that poses a threat to our livelihood and existence. Be warned that we will work day and night to ensure the safety of our women and children. The community must also assist Government in taking back our communities. Be aware of those in your surroundings, at all times know your children’s whereabouts and make your neighbors’ business your business because in so doing we can help to protect each other.

To the parents of this beautiful girl we wish to say that no parent deserves to go through such pain and suffering and that you are in our prayers and thoughts during this dark hour in your life. As the Provincial Government we do not just wish to offer empty comfort but we assure you that everything will be done to bring the unscrupulous murderer or murderers to book and deal with such acts in an appropriate manner. We will never stand by and watch our communities being run by monsters that leave us fearing for our lives and those of our children. We will not encourage a situation where this Province is known only for child rapes and murders. We therefore call on communities to join hands with us to completely stop these barbaric individuals that thrive on the vulnerability of our women and children. Working together hand in hand, side by side we can move this province forward.
