PREMIER INTERVENES TO ADDRESS THE HULL STREET HOUSING PROJECT PROBLEMS
The Premier of the Northern Cape Ms Hazel Jenkins, MEC for Human Settlements and Cooperative Governance Mr. Kenny Mmoiemang and Sol Plaatje executive Mayor Mr. Patrick Everyday have met and engaged with the Hull Street residents, today, 25 August 2009, to find possible solutions to all the problems and concerns raised.
The Premier and her delegation have a deep understanding of the seriousness and impact of lack of housing delivery has in the lives of our people hence they intervened to address the housing issues urgently.
They agreed to the following terms:
- Stay of evictions until an appropriate political solution is found
- Until legality of evictions is determined
- Governance arrangements of the Sol Plaatje Housing board to be relooked, taking into account the composition of the board in terms of gender representation
- Criteria of appointment of board be checked
- Clarify the Terms of the board and accountability of the board
- Duration of the office of the CEO
- Sanitation with regard to the housing project must be addressed by Sol Plaatje housing Company
- The MEC and Mayor to look into the matter and report back to the Premier where a political decision will be taken.
The premier is hopeful that an amicable solution will be found to the Hull street housing project problems.
