On behalf of the Provincial Government of the Northern Cape and its entire people, the Premier of the Northern Cape Ms Hazel Jenkins would like to offer her heartfelt condolences on the death of long-time serving ANC stalwart, former Member of the Provincial Legislature and former Member of the National Parliament Mr. Sphetho Asiya.
His untimely death is a great loss to the country and his family. Sphetho Asiya has come from the ranks of activists in the struggle for democracy, in South Africa. He has more specifically come from the ranks of the fearless and militant youth of our country. He was also very active in the youth structures and experienced torture and was on several occasions detained.
During his tenure in Legislature (1994 – 2004) and National Parliament (2004-2009) he pursued his political goals with determination, he greatly contributed to the ideal of creating to a truly non racial, non sexist and democratic South Africa. He participated vigorously in the portfolio committees to ensure that our government is steered in the right direction and be responsive to the plight of the poor of our country. Till his death, he remained committed and dedicated to the goal of a better Life for all our people.
He will be remembered as an impressive personality and enthusiastic South African. Today, our condolences also go to his family.
