The Premier of the Northern Cape, Ms Hazel Jenkins along with the Provincial Cabinet adopted the Bopanang Shelter for Women and Children in Upington. This shelter provides women and children with temporary shelter whilst assisting them to gain the necessary assistance and support to fight against this scourge. Ms Jenkins thanked the caretakers of the shelter for their selfless sacrifice and indicated that the abuse of women and children needs to stop because this hampers the freedom of women and children. Government will always support efforts that aim to give women and children their dignity back so that they can make a meaningful contribution to the communities they live in.

The centre was given children’s clothes and toiletries that would not only assist at the centre but newborn babies also to ensure that they have a dignified life. This was a joint contribution of MECs, Mayors and councillors.

This handover was followed by a community march led by the Premier to highlight the plight of women abuse and to raise awareness that people should start speaking out against this scourge so that communities start getting involved. Participants in the march included the Provincial Cabinet, government officials, Women’s’ League members and men and women from across society.
