ELECTRICIANS

We as students that had the opportunity to study this year, with bursaries from the SKA are firstly very grateful for the opportunity given to us.

Carnarvon is a small town that did not have a lot of work opportunities for us until the SKA came on board. Carnarvon has gotten more and more opportunities to grow, it is now only for our local people to take these opportunities and make the most of it.

We were very privileged to be the first group to be sent to study for a year, out of our community.

This year was truly amazing and left us with a lot of knowledge that will be beneficial to us as well as our community.

It was a year which we learned a lot and also gained valuable life lessons. The knowledge and skills we obtained this year is going to open a lot of doors for us as electricians.

We were very fortunate to study at the Northern Cape Urban FET (Moremogolo Campus), where we were moulded into upcoming electricians.

We also had the opportunity to attend a Life Skills course for 8 weeks. These classes taught us how to handle the different situations we encountered this year.

In the electrical workshop it took us a while to adjust ourselves on how things work in the workshop, but as we got used to how things were done, we enjoyed it more and more.

We also had the opportunity to have some first hand experience by working with qualified electricians. We are very grateful for our lecturer, Mr. Johan Smith for what he taught us. It will stay with us for many years to come.

Now the time has come for us to go back home and show what we have learned, to uplift Carnarvon in all the ways that we can. We are grateful for the support of our community and now the time is here for us to go back and motivate the youth to take opportunities like this and make the most of it.

BUILDERS

Coming from a rural area is a place called Carnarvon, where there is a lack of career guidance and low employment rate.

Luckily for Carnarvon and its surrounding areas the SKA has decided to invest one of their biggest projects in our district. They come forward with business and more job opportunities for the local people of the district. That is where we as builders got the opportunities to come and get further training. The SKA has made it possible for us to get where we are today. They gave us a chance to get out and experience more in the building world. The year started well and ends with a great success. We have learned a lot in this training.

Now the time has come for us to go home and implement what we have learned. We must go and upgrade our town, and create more opportunities for our youth of our beautiful town.

In conclusion we are really thankful for this opportunity that SKA has offered us to come and learn and build up more knowledge to go back and implement what we had experienced this year. We are faithful and believe in ourselves that we could go back and change our community and its low job rate.

WELDERS AND PLUMBERS

Background

As young adults from a town like Van Wyksvlei, Carnarvon, Vosburg and Williston are like a desert, because without job opportunities there is nothing happening. Jobs are few in the Karoo, sometimes there come jobs but is nothing compared to anything. After matric (Grade 12), most of our parents do not have the money to send us to college or university, so we must look out for jobs by ourselves. We love our homes and our province so we do not like to go out to other provinces to look for jobs, but to stay/ stuck at home and believe for something that might never happen. That is why we take every opportunity that comes our way.

Experience that we gained this year

With the experience that we gained this year is a plus point to our future and needs. After this we can go back to our communities and neighbouring towns and start small businesses to create jobs for others and look after our families at home. We can even apply for jobs if advertised. And with the big change that SKA and MeerKAT will bring to our district and home towns it will be a dream comes true.

According to SKA

SKA is the company that sends us to the college. It is a wonderful opportunity that they gave us and promising us jobs if we come forward and show what we learned in this year. They also bring jobs to the district, like the Karoo. It will change everything that happened in the Karoo. So we all are behind SA and SKA to get the bid in 2012. It is really good what they are doing.

So we all as plumbers and welders are grateful for what SKA is and will do for us further in the future.

What we as wielders can do:
Welding types: Gas welding, Arek welding, CO2 (Mic) welding, Pint welding

Other work types: Brayzing, grenneng, working with the bending machine, spray painting, working with the guilotene

Work that we can do: security gates, burglarbars (doors), braai stands.

We can do anything if we get a plan and we have all the materials and tools that are needed.

CARPENTER STUDENT

My naam is Gavin Winston Reen. Ek kom van Carnarvon en my straat naam is End Straat 17, Carnarvon 8925. Daar by ons is baie min wrk en werk is skaars. Mense is baie wat nie werk het en sit in die straat en wag vir werk. Die werk wat ons daar het is plaas werk en bou werk.

SKA het baie dinge in one dorp verrig. SKA is die eerste groot ding wat in Carnarvon gebeur het. SKA het baie deure vir ons as groepe en ons gemeenskap in oog vir die jaar 2012. SKA het ook werk vir baie mense in ons dorp en in die omliggende dorpe in die Noord Kaap.

Ek het baie kom leer by die College en by meneer Adams. Ek is baie gelukkig vir die opleiding wat ek weer kan gedoen het na matriek. Meneer Adams se n jaar is te min om my alles te leer wat jy ken. Ek het geleer om deure te hang en skirting te slaan. Die beste van alles is om kaste te bou. Ek het baie geleer om kaste en ingeboude kaste te bou.

Ons sal terugvoer by die SKA en Carnarvon oor die opleiding. Dit was lekker om College toe te gaan en om te leer van bou werk, welding, plumbing, electrical en om te leer vir die jaar.

Ek will net dankie se vir SKA en die College vir die geleentheid wat ons as groep kon kry om te leer en namens ons gemeenskap van Carnarvon en Van Wyksvlei
