Media Statement: Funeral of Oom Dawid Kruiper

29 JUNE 2012

The Northern Cape Provincial Government wishes to inform the media on matters pertaining to the funeral preparations of Oom Dawid Kruiper.
In preparing for the funeral, the Presidency has approved a Special Provincial Official funeral for Oom Dawid Kruiper. A task team with four representatives from the Kruiper and Festus families and different government departments has been established and has been involved in all aspects of preparing for the funeral.

We would like to confirm the details of the funeral to be as follows:
Date: Saturday, 30 June 2012
Time: 11H00
Venue: Witdraai, Andriesvale

We are expecting that approximately 2000 people will attend the funeral. Delegations from various Khoisan communities from across the country as well as representatives from government have indicated that they will attend. The Acting Premier of the Northern Cape, Honourable Cjikela will deliver the keynote address at the funeral and will be joined in messages of condolences from representatives from The National Khoisan Council, SANPARKS and Assmang Mine. We would also like to confirm the attendance and participation of the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Honourable Marius Fransman.

The preparatory committee has been meeting regularly and consulted with the families to ensure that their wishes and that of Oom Dawid are incorporated into the programme and proceedings. Since this is a Special Provincial Official funeral, the South African Police Services will form a guard of honour when the mortal remains of Oom Dawid will be carried from the hearse to the tent where the funeral

proceedings will take place. Another guard of honour will be formed when the coffin will be carried to the gravesite. The Police will also perform “The Last Post” as the coffin is lowered into the grave. As government, we would like to appeal to all funeral goers and mourners to ensure that we lay Oom Dawid to rest with the necessary respect and dignity. Oom Dawid has contributed most of his life to matters affecting his people and in laying him to rest, we should all be sensitive to the grief and mourning of those he has left behind.
