Skateboarding Superstars in South Africa

Some of the biggest names on the global skateboarding scene are descending on South Africa in the final run-up to the world’s greatest skateboarding event, the 2012 Maloof Money Cup world skateboarding championships presented by Kumba Iron Ore. Two pro tours are hitting towns and cities across the country before the competition in Kimberley from 28 – 30 September.

The Deathwish Baker riders Lizard King and Brian Herman will join the last leg of the Skateboarding for Hope community outreach initiative for demonstrations and clinics in the Northern Cape mining towns of Kathu and Postmasburg. Skateboarding for Hope is a joint initiative between Maloof Skateboarding and the Northern Cape government to introduce the youth of South Africa to skateboarding as an affordable, accessible lifestyle alternative.

The Famous Stars and Straps Pro Tour starring Manny Santiago, Kurtis Colamonico, Luis Tolentino and Felix Arguelles will head for Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town before hitting Kimberley to compete in the Maloof contest for their share of the R4-million prize purse. Skate fans will enjoy live skate demos, street skating with these professional American skateboarders and meet and greets throughout the series of stops.

DEMO/SIGNING SESSIONS:

Thursday, 20 September – 14h00: Boogaloos Brightwater Skatepark, Johannesburg
Saturday, 22 September: Wavehouse Skatepark, Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Durban
Sunday, 23 September – 15h00: Signing session at Boogaloos, Canal Walk, Cape Town
Monday, 24 September – 12h00: Salesians, Cape Town
Thursday, 27 September – 14h00: Maloof Skate Plaza, Kimberley

According to Tim McFerran, they are really excited about this year’s Pro Tours. “The growth of skateboarding in South Africa is currently unmatched anywhere in the world. These tours will take definitely help to continue the growth and excitement about the sport in the fast growing skateboarding country in the world. It is a great opportunity for local fans to see some of their heroes in action. Guys like Lizard King and Manny were part of last year’s event and have quickly become national favourites. They are loving being back in the country and can’t wait to skate the Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberley next week,” mentions McFerran.

The Maloof Money Cup skateboarding world championships take place in Kimberley, Northern Cape from 28 – 30 September. Entry tickets for Saturday and Sunday are available from Computicket outlets, Shoprite and Checkers store countrywide. Tickets are R50 and weekend passes are available at R80. Entry for Friday’s opening ceremony and qualifiers are free.
