The Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul, together with Members of the Executive Council, officiated over the ceremonial renaming of Schroeder Street to Alfred Gubula Street in Upington.
The renaming forms part of Government’s programme of honouring our heroes and heroines for their selfless struggle against colonial rule.
Tata Alfred Gubula was a leader of the United Democratic Front. He was also the leader of the "Save the Patriots Campaign," a national campaign to save all comrades on death row throughout the country. Tata Alfred Gubula led the Paballelo community uprisings in the mid-1980s. Working together with human rights lawyers, he brought global attention to the Upington 26 case.
It is important for us to recognise that name changes are vital for reclaiming our heritage and cultural identity, as well as honouring our heroes and heroines who fought for the liberation of this country and this Province.
