The Northern Cape Department of Social Development has launched the Grassroots Drop-In Centre in Richmond, marking a significant step forward in child protection and community support. The centre is designed to provide vulnerable children with care, guidance and opportunities to thrive, while easing the burden on families. MEC Mase Manopole in her keynote addressed social challenges such as gender-based violence (GBV) and teenage pregnancy. She called for accountability across society, urging men and fathers to take responsibility. Her remarks highlighted the devastating impact of violence on women and children, while stressing that families and communities must play an active role in creating safe environments. The centre will provide daily meals, homework assistance, hygiene facilities and psychosocial support to children affected by poverty and neglect. Its mission is to create a safe, structured after-school environment that restores dignity and hope. To further encourage youth development, MEC Mase Manopole pledged R40,000 towards uniforms for young performers, highlighting the importance of nurturing talent as a protective and empowering tool. Speakers emphasised that the centre's future success will depend on strong partnerships with families. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to remain actively engaged, working alongside staff to ensure lasting impact. With more than two decades of service, Grassroots has already proven the power of community driven development, with many staff members once beneficiaries themselves. The launch reinforces a unified call to action, protecting, nurturing and securing a brighter future for children.
