Over the 2026 Easter weekend, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the Northern Cape reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sport development and social cohesion by supporting a range of vibrant community tournaments across the province. Ranging from the Premier's Easter Soccer and Netball Tournament in Petrusville, to the Richtersveld Mayoral Rugby Tournament in Port Nolloth, the Connie Mouers Soccer Tournament in Upington and the Flip Kordom Soccer Tournament in Kakamas, these events brought together athletes, families, and communities in a powerful celebration of unity through sport. Beyond competition, the tournaments served as important platforms for nurturing local talent, promoting healthy lifestyles, and strengthening the social fabric of communities. Sport continues to play a critical role in bridging divides, fostering mutual respect, and creating safe spaces where young people can thrive. These tournaments not only showcased the passion and talent that exists within our communities, but also highlighted the importance of sustained investment in community-based sporting initiatives. By supporting these events, the Department contributes to building inclusive communities where diversity is embraced, and opportunities for participation are expanded. The Easter weekend tournaments also provided a positive alternative for young people, steering them away from social ills while instilling discipline, teamwork, and a sense of purpose. As the Department continues to champion sport development across all districts, it remains committed to using sport as a catalyst for social cohesion, nation building, and community empowerment.
