The Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, delivered a keynote address at the Chancellor's Investiture Ceremony held at Sol Plaatje University on 24 March 2026, marking a significant moment in the institution's growing legacy. The ceremony formally inaugurated Thebe Ikalafeng as the university's second Chancellor. Hosted at the university's Great Hall, the event brought together a diverse and distinguished audience, including alumni from across the globe, members of the Ikalafeng family led by the family matriarch, matriculants from his former school, and the broader Sol Plaatje community. The programme unfolded with a visit to the university museum, followed by a dignified academic procession and the formal robing of Chancellor Ikalafeng, reflecting the depth of academic tradition and pride. A defining moment of the evening was the unveiling of a portrait of Sol Plaatje by Premier Saul and Chancellor Ikalafeng.
The artwork, enriched with Plaatje's original handwriting and excerpts from his work, stands as a powerful tribute to his enduring legacy, as South Africa commemorates 150 years since his birth. In his address, Premier Saul described Dr Ikalafeng as a globally recognised champion of African identity and economic sovereignty. He highlighted how Dr Ikalafeng's journey from his roots in Kimberley to his continental and international influence, embodies the vision of a brand driven African renaissance. Dr Ikalafeng's academic and professional credentials further affirm his stature. He holds a BSc and MBA from Marquette University, as well as a Master of Laws (LLM) in Intellectual Property. He is a Chartered Marketer in South Africa and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors South Africa, reflecting a career defined by excellence, leadership and a deep commitment to advancing Africa's global narrative.
