On 19 March 2026, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in Northern Cape announced the official handover of a newly refurbished wastewater pump station and outfall line in Jan Kempdorp. The handover will took place on Sunday, 22 March 2026, in partnership with the Phokwane Local Municipality, as part of the global World Water Day commemorations.
Funded through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) at a cost exceeding R55 million, the project addresses longstanding sewage spillages caused by aging infrastructure overwhelmed by the town’s expansion. The upgraded system now supports over 8,300 residents and more than 2,000 households, while enabling future development. The improvements include a new pump station, upgraded pipeline, and integration with existing networks to ensure efficient wastewater management. Aligned with the 2026 theme, “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” the project promotes dignified sanitation and environmental protection, contributing to sustainable water access for all.
