DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS WINS YET ANOTHER ACOLADE, THIS TIME FOR BEST PROVINCIAL DEPARTMENT (FOR EACH OF THE NINE PROVINCES) with a score of 91, 67%.
The then Department Economic Affairs, now the Department of Economic Development & Tourism is booming with excitement and pride for the national recognition it has been bestowed with, by being awarded for excellence as best provincial department. It is a good feeling to reap the fruits of hard work. The department for a period of five years has embarked on a five year turnaround strategy in order to re organized itself for better service delivery,
The department has put in place management and internal control systems, these systems have ensured that the department consistently complies with best practices in all areas of governance. In the past 5 years the department has received awards for: Premier Excellence Bronze Award 2007/8, Peer Mechanism Review Award (PMR) 2008; Premier Excellence Silver Awards 2008/9 and Annual Public Sector Reporting Awards.
Eight years ago, the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) introduced a series of important awards in the public sector to recognize the pursuit of excellence in annual reports published by all provincial and national departments.
The Awards are called the Annual Public Sector Reporting Awards or (SAIGA Reporting Awards).
The SAIGA Reporting Awards project produces twelve awards amongst which is: One for the best provincial department (for each of the nine provinces)
* One for the most consistent highest score over the last three years and
* One for the best provincial department (for each of the nine provinces)
The overall average score recorded by all departments this year is a record of 87, 36% (the highest in the 8 years history of the Awards, which shows that the competition was really stiff).
The Head of Department wants to salute the department’s entire staff, for their sterling hard work in contributing in the betterment of the department and also wants to thank all stakeholders for the support which they have given to the department.
