Top South African Skateboarders To Descend On Kimberley

Some of the top skateboarders in the country will descend on Kimberley in the Northern Cape this weekend to compete in the Midway Mayhem amateur contest on Saturday, 2 March 2013. Presented by the Northern Cape Province and the Maloof Money Cup, the event celebrates the halfway mark to the next Maloof Money Cup world skateboarding championships in September.

Participants will be pulling out all the stops during the jam style contest to ensure their share of the total prize purse of R30 000. Thrilling skateboarding action can be expected with competitors including the 2012 Maloof amateur champion Kanya Spani as well as top ten amateur finalists Simon Stipcich, Braxton Haine, Jean Marc Johannes and 2011 amateur winner Justus Kotze.

Local skateboarders Warrick Delport of Kimberley and Suedolf Odendaal of Bloemfontein will also be staking their claim on the title. Delport was bitterly disappointed last year when he had to pull out of the Maloof amateur championships due to a broken collar bone. Both local boys have secured their spots at Midway Mayhem by qualifying in a competition at the Kimberley Skate Plaza earlier this month.

Entry to the Kimberley Maloof Skate Plaza will be free to skateboarding enthusiasts and members of the public. Great spot prizes are up for grabs and local performers will provide live entertainment to create a festive atmosphere at the state-of-the-art skate park. The line-up also includes skate clinics and a trick jam contest.

On Sunday, 3 March, Tim McFerran of Maloof Skateboarding, will conduct a basketball coaching clinicfrom 14h00 at the Hazel Jenkins basketball court at the skate plaza. Forty Kimberley kids will receive their first introduction to the sport and learn the rules of the game.

According to the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Mr John Block, this will be a perfect opportunity to turn the spotlight back on skateboarding. “This event will give the skateboarders the chance to experience the incredible magic of the Maloof Money Cup and the amazing facilities at the skate park. We want to attract the skateboarding fraternity to Kimberley and ensure that they gain more experience and have the opportunity to hone their skills. By hosting events of this nature, we’re putting our resources behind growing the sport in South Africa and continuing to offer youngsters access to this life-changing sport”.

The Northern Cape has been home to the Maloof Money Cup Skateboarding World Championships for the past two years and will once again host the greatest skateboarding event in the world this September. The three-day skateboarding extravaganza will feature some of the greatest international pro skaters in action on the magnificent street and vert courses.
