The historic official opening of the Local House of Traditional Leaders is a first for the Northern Cape. This first session of the house of traditional leaders, will be attended by dignitaries, royal families, MECs, Mayors, officials from the Department of Provincial & Local Government.

Section 43, 44 of the Northern Cape Traditional Leadership, Governance and Houses of Traditional Leaders Act( Act 2/2007), calls for the establishment of the Local Houses of Traditional Leaders, and also prescribes the manner and steps to be followed towards the establishment of these houses. The Premier has now complied with the entire process of the Act.

During the consultation process between the Premier and the eight Senior Traditional Leaders who constituted the electoral college, it was resolved that the Kgalagadi Local House of Traditional Leaders must be constituted by 9 members, two of whom will be senior traditional leaders while seven will be headmen elected into office by the electoral college made up of the eight Senior Leaders from the Kgalagadi District.

The elections were held under the auspices of the IEC on the 15 May 2008 and the results were announced by the IEC. The term of office of a local house is 5 years and must run concurrently with the duration of the Provincial House.

The Local House must be established within 30 days from the date of elections, hence the date of 12 June 2008.

On this day, Premier will officially inaugurate the members of the Local House. The members will administer an "Oath of Office" which will be overseen by a Commissioner of Oath- in this case, the Magistrate of Kuruman.
