Government is taking action and we moved away from bitter memories of community unrests which entailed destruction, manipulation and violent behavior to a new chapter of hope, unity, growth and development. Mme Grizelda Cjikella will be the keynote speaker at the Sod Turning Ceremony on Wednesday, 20 March 2013 at Glenred Community Hall in Glenred, Kuruman at 10h00.
The complete estimated value of the roads demanded by community members as contained in the Memorandum of Demands amounts to R 1.3 billion. The Sishen Iron Ore Community Developmet Trust (SIOC-CDT) agreed to support the first phase of the upgrading of roads in the Joe Morolong Municipality.
We need to be aware of the fact that due to the new demarcation process the Northern Cape Province inherited the backlog on roads which previously was the responsibility of the North West Province to upgrade and maintain. The provincial government despite limited finances is doing its utmost best in terms of roads development. The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works, under the leadership of MEC Dawid Rooi, absorbed the roads function from the District Municipalities during July 2011 in order to ensure optimal investment of finances. This is supported by the South African Constitution, Article 108 of 1996 schedule part A, which stipulates this function is the responsibility of provincial departments
This project will focus on the upgrade of gravel roads to tarred roads within the Joe Morolong Local Municipality in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. The roads under construction were prioritized by communities through memorandum of demand that was presented to the Department on 21 May 2012 from the communities of Bothithong, Dithakong, Laxey and Gamojeremane.
The project includes the upgrading of:
Samsokolo to Laxey (27 km)
Heiso to Dithakong (31 km)
