In a bid to curb the number of accidents involving scholars, more than 1 000 learners from Grade R-3 were recently taken under the wing of the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison to be educated on road safety.

The initiative was aimed at equipping the learners to know how to behave on the roads and how to safely cross the road which will contribute to reducing the number of accidents involving learners.

The collaborative efforts between the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison and the National Road Traffic Management Corporation took Road Safety Education to four schools in the Province.

The four schools included 454 learners from Molehabangwe Primary school; 352 learners from Zingisa Number 1 lower Primary school; 358 learners from Boitshoko Primary school and 250 learners Isago Primary school in Galeshewe, Kimberly.

The learners were taught and demonstrated on pedestrian safety such as how to cross the road safely and the importance of being visible.

Danny Cat, the Safety Mascot, joined the operations in his brown suit, long tale and funny dance moves as a fun but educational aspect of the demonstrations which left the scholars in giggles but remembering what they were taught.  The issuing of educational material was another aspect of insuring the learners remembered what they were taught.

Meanwhile, also forming part of the department’s Road Safety Drive were cyclists who were taught and reminded on cyclists’ safety under the theme “Cyclist Safety”.

About 70 cyclists received road safety information and tips along with equipment to help keep them safe and visible on the roads such as reflective bands, helmets, and lights.

The cyclists’ safety campaign was aimed at promoting visibility of cyclists by giving them reflective belts and lights for their bicycles while they were given helmets for their own safety. The distribution of such materials and information will help reduce the road accidents involving cyclists.
