The engagements were organized to further enhance working relationships between the Province and the Taxi Industry and to sustain the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 plan which aims making roads safer for all.

Departmental MEC, Mr Mac Jack said he is always encouraged following meeting met with critical role players in the Taxi Industry in the Province as the engagements are always fruitful and help iron out any matters that need to be addressed.  Part of the efforts of meeting with the role players is to continue building working relationships with the industry while more engagements are due to unfold with more role players.

The Namakwaland Taxi Association, Hantam Taxi Association and The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) form part of the recent associations that met with MEC Jack and Departmental officials.

The Head of Department, Mr Stephen Jonkers said the engagements were based on enhancing a working relationship with the Taxi Industry.  He added that it was also to engage on the festive operations, joint special programmes, work ethics for all parties and a proper code of conduct amongst a number of topical issues.

Jonkers said a strategic session with the Taxi Industry in the form on an Indaba is planned for March this year which will create a platform to continue meaningful engagements with the industry.

“The Indaba will look at ways to move the Taxi Industry forward. It will also evaluate the Pillars of Road Safety and will also aim to strengthen and enhance road safety,” he added.

Jonkers also said, “We are further sensitizing the Taxi Industry that the Operating Licensing Board has been phased out and that the Department will now lead the new entity called the Provincial Regulatory Entity.”

The Provincial Regulatory Entity was gazatted on 1 February 2014.
