The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Mac Jack, expressed shock and concern at the recent spate of gruesome killings and violence against women, children and the elderly as this has send shock waves throughout the Northern Cape Province.
The South African Police Services in the province confirmed, amongst others, the following cases that made headlines in a space of a week and currently under investigations:
- A 53 years old Douglas man who hacked his 19 year old nephew and her mother to death using a metre long axe and then injuring his 80 years old mother.
- A Lerato Park woman died after her husband allegedly stabbed her with a broken beer bottle in their shack and later handed himself over to the police.
- A 33 year old Kimberley man shot and killed his 31year old girlfriend before turning a gun to himself yesterday morning.
‘The reported crime of a 59 year old man from Douglas area who hacked his family to death with a metre long axe as reported through the media is a horrendous and wicked act that calls for united action against perpetrators and all those who commit any form of gender based violence in the province’, MEC Mac Jack said.
We strongly urge our law enforcement agencies to do everything in their power in making sure that they apprehend the heartless perpetrator who remain in hiding after hacking her family with an axe.
It is important as a society to intensively educate our children about family values to avoid such crimes in future and my appeal to families involved to ponder over what transpired and help prevent similar killings in the future.
As the custodian of safety in the province, we once again call upon all role-players in the fight against crime to work closely with communities in dealing with this evil scourge and all social ills that happen within our neighbourhoods.
As the provincial government, we wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families during these difficult times of mourning their beloved ones.
MEC Mac Jack will visit some of the bereaved families soon.
