Weekly ongoing traffic operations and high visibility of Provincial traffic officials across the Northern Cape is a clear indication that we have a zero tolerance to lawlessness on our roads.

As the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape we are determined to curb road fatalities, accidents and any form of lawlessness on our roads.  In line with our ongoing 365 Days of Road Safety activities we continue with vigorous operations for safer Northern Cape roads.

Speed Operations held at the weekend on the N12 between Christiana and Three Sister saw two drivers arrested for speeding.  One of the drivers was doing 162km on a 120km zone while the highest speed recorded was 201km, both drivers were on the N12 between Victoria West and Three Sisters.

Operations further revealed at 119 summonses issued for speeding and 13 for tyres, defective lights and other offences.

Other Speed Operations unfolded on the R31 between Kimberley and Barkley West with seven speeding summonses issued and the highest recorded speed being 111km on an 80km zone and another on the N12 between Hope Town and Strydenburg with four speeding summonses issued and the highest speed of 150km in an 120km zone.

“…we want to send a message to the lawbreakers that we will not tolerate any form of lawlessness on our roads,” said the Head of the Department, Mr Steven Jonkers.

Jonkers said, “Our ongoing operations is a clear demonstration that we have a zero tolerance to lawlessness on our roads.”

Jonkers added that the high visibility of traffics on our roads will continue to be intensified and operations will not cease as the Province aims to curb challenges picked up through traffic operations on an ongoing basis.

“People must remember to always buckle up as it saves lives, not to speed and to always observe the rules of the roads,” Jonkeers said in conclusion.
