Premier Zamani Saul Appoints Mr Zolile Monakali as New Member of the Executive Council for Education

The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Zolile Monakali as the new MEC for Education in the Province. The former MEC for Education, Mr Mac Collen Jack passed away in August this year after serving the Province and the education sector with utmost distinction and dedication.

Mr Monakali is a seasoned public servant and brings with him a wealth of experience that will ensure that the education footprint across the Province will be enhanced and together with a dedicated team will ensure during these trying times that our learners and educators get the best quality service possible. Premier is confident that with the support of his colleagues in the Executive, the Legislature and in the Provincial Administration that the agenda of quality learning and teaching will continue to be a priority.

Mr Monakali, who was born in Prieska, started his teaching career at Ethembeni High School from 1994 - 1999 as a Post level 1 teacher, then Head of Department and later principal.  He also taught at Heuwesig High from 1999 – 2004 as a Deputy Principal. He went on to work at the Department of Education in Pixley regional office as a Skills development facilitator until 2005.

Mr Monakali then took up employment at the Siyathemba Local Municipality as Corporate Services Director and later as Municipal Manager at Thembelihle local Municipality until 2010. After that he was appointed as District Director for COGHSTA for a period of 10 years until 2019 when he was deployed as Executive Mayor of Pixley ka Seme District until early 2020.

Political career

  • Activist inaugural chairman of Prieska ANC branch. Elected into the Pixley ka Seme ANC REC in 1997 to date.
  • Occupied positions of additional member, Deputy Regional Secretary, Deputy Chairman and Regional Chairman since 2013 to date. Served as Chair of Sadtu Prieska branch, member of SAMWU and Nehawu.

Education

  • Completed a BTech in Education at Tshwane University of Techology in 2005
  • Post graduate Diploma at UNISA in 2008.
  • Currently registered for a MPA at the University of Free State.

Premier Saul on behalf of the Provincial Administration extends his well wishes to Mr Monakali and has full confidence that his impeccable credentials will ensure that the Departmnet of Education will be firmly placed on a trajectory of growth, development and success.

Mr Monakali will be officially sworn in tomorrow, 16 September 2020 and will thereafter assume his duties.
