Members of the media are advised that the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, has declared a Special Provincial Official Funeral Category Two for the late Mr Gauta George Mokgoro. A Special Provincial Official Funeral Category Two is reserved for distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of South Africa on request by the Premier of a Province.
The President has instructed that the National Flag fly at half-mast in the Northern Cape Province on the day of the funeral as a mark of respect to the late Mr Gauta George Mokgoro.
A Provincial task team has been set up by the Premier, Dr Zamani Saul, with representatives from the Mokgoro family and different government departments that are involved in all aspects of preparing for the funeral. Dr Zamani Saul, will deliver the eulogy at the Special Provincial Official Funeral.
The late Mr. Mokgoro was a member of the first Executive Committee of the ANC Youth league under the leadership of Dr Arthur Letele. The late Mr Mokgoro, a former Robben Island detainee, served the Northern Cape and the country in various leadership capacities as the former Deputy Speaker of the first democratic Provincial Legislature of the Northern Cape and as a former Member of the National Council of Provinces. He passed away on the 10th August 2022 and will be laid to rest on Saturday, 20th August 2022.
The Premier, Dr Saul, has expressed his gratitude to the family of the late Mr Mokgoro for his contribution to the people of the Northern Cape and the country and on behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Government and its people extends his sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the late, Mr Mokgoro.
