Modern, Growing, Successful Province

Memorandum of Agreement Between the Northern Cape Provincial Government and the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MERSETA)

Members of the media are invited to a media briefing that will outline the partnership between the Northern Cape Provincial Government and the merSETA, to assist with skills development for the youth of the Northern Cape.

It is indisputable that the most valuable asset in the Northern Cape Province is its people. This statement or observation is particularly important because people need to gain the necessary skills to function to their full potential. It is generally acknowledged that a more differentiated and complex set of skills is required for various possible uses, such as acquiring various sets of knowledge, access to relevant services, communication, interaction, and participation in diverse settings. Therefore, human capital development is critical for the Province to reduce poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Coupled with the preceding, the shortage of skills can be attributed to the mismatch between the supply of skills and the labour market demand, aggravated by a loss of skills to other Provinces that offer higher salaries and better conditions of employment.

However, with the correct approach, the Northern Cape could foster and maintain the requisite skills base through continuous formal schooling, higher education, in-service training, appropriate work experience, investments in health, outreach and extension programmes, and life experience. It is for this reason that the Northern Cape is constantly seeking out partnerships to assist with skilling the youth in the Province and preparing them for the job market.

To this end, the Provincial Government has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the merSETA to fund a three-year skills development project.

Details pertaining to this Agreement will be announced at a media briefing scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 12 April 2023

Venue: Fifth Floor Boardroom, Office of the Premier, Kimberley

Time: 14h00

The media briefing can also be viewed via live-streaming on the Northern Cape Government Facebook page, and the merSETA Facebook page, Youtube channel and Instagram page. Members of the media can also log in virtually. Zoom link will be made available on confirmation.
