MEC Mase Manopole, officially handed over pesticides and led a practical demonstration at Greenpoint Commonage Farm, in partnership with the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. The initiative forms part of the Northern Cape’s coordinated response to the African Armyworm outbreak.
The intervention, valued at R1.3 million, underscores the department’s commitment to protecting farmers and ensuring food security in the province.
Resources distributed included:
* Pesticides (Decis and Sumi Alpha)
* Backpack and bakkie-mounted sprayers
* Personal protective equipment (overalls, masks, goggles)
Farmers also received training in:
* Safe pesticide application
* Pest identification
* Integrated pest management techniques
MEC Manopole emphasized the province’s readiness: “We understand the challenges this outbreak presents, and we are actively responding to mitigate the damage. Our teams will continue providing guidance and implementing measures to contain the African Armyworm.”
With strong collaboration from national partners, the department is taking decisive action to safeguard agricultural production.
