The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul accompanied by the MEC for Education Mr Mc Collen Jack and senior officials from the Department of Education visited the Winter School Camp at Kimberley Technical High School today.

The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul accompanied by the MEC for Education Mr Mc Collen Jack and senior officials from the Department of Education visited the Winter School Camp at Kimberley Technical High School today.

As a means of responding to the goals of Action Plan 2019 - Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2030 and an improved National Senior Certificate pass rate in 2019, the Northern Cape Department of Education hosted 22 Winter Residential Camps as well as 40 School-Based Walk-In Centres for Grade 12 learners in all districts in the province from 16-26 June 2019.

The Winter Camp Programme is designed to improve Grade 12 learners’ performance, particularly in schools that underperformed in the 2018 National Senior Certificate (NSC) and in March 2019.  Performance trends of selected subjects in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations were considered for enrolment.  Further to that, learners from periodic underperforming and chronic underperforming schools received preference during the selection process.  The Winter Camp Programme is made up of a series of daily presentations and tutorials with consolidation of content as the main driver of the programme.  Learners were assisted with conceptual understanding of the core topics that they will be examined in their final examinations.  Tutoring was also provided by experienced teachers who have a record of high learner achievement at their own schools.

Added to these camps, dedicated camps have also been arranged for Top-Achieving Learners, Middle Group (Average) learners and Technical learners. A wide variety of subjects are offered to the matriculants. The subjects that are offered at our Winter Schools are English First Additional Language, Afrikaans Home Language, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Agricultural Science, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Technical Maths, Technical Physics, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, History, Geography and Tourism.

More then 6000 learners benefitted from the Winter School Camps in preparation for the final Examinations. During the visit today, MEC Maccollen Jack reminded the Class of 2019 that their academic results will be used to evaluate his performance. "We need work hard to obtain number 1 position in the country, hence we are having these holiday camps to support learners and improve their academic performance. It is important that during my term we turn around the situation in our schools."

The Premier, Dr Saul, thanked the parents, teachers, tutors and learners for their commitment shown during the Winter Camps. He also thanked the MEC and management of the Department of Education for their contribution in ensuring the success of the camps. Dr Saul pledged his unwavering support to the class of 2019 and also gave them the assurance that no child will sit at home after matric due to unavailability of fees to go and study further at Institutions of Higher Learning. In his motivation to them he articulated the vision of a modern, growing and successful Province and in order to achieve that, the Province will require future, smart learners. Everyone has their part to play in ensuring the success of the grade 12 learners and therefore the Premier also made a plea to the parents of all learners to give their full support to the matriculants “Parents must not burden their children with unnecessary chores and please allow them to give their undivided attention to their studies during the next coming weeks as they prepare for their final examination,” said the Premier.

Dr Saul has made Education and Health his top two priorities for this Administration and will play an active role in ensuring the success thereof.
