The Northern Cape Department of Education recently hosted the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) Best School Awards at Sternharm Intermediate School in the ZF Mgcawu District. Since its inception in 2009/10, this annual event has highlighted schools and districts that go above and beyond in delivering nutritious meals and supporting learner wellbeing. After a thorough evaluation process, three provincial champions were announced. Moedi Secondary School was honoured with the Best School Award, Van Zylsrus Intermediate School received the Best Farm School Award and Namakwa District was celebrated as Best District. These winners will proudly represent the Northern Cape at the national level.
As part of its ongoing commitment, the Northern Cape Department of Education also paid tribute to the dedicated teams behind the programme, School Management Teams, Educators, Volunteers, Food Handlers and School Governing Bodies, whose daily commitment ensures that learners receive balanced meals prepared with care and consistency. The NSNP is more than a feeding initiative, it is a cornerstone of academic success. Research shows that access to nutritious meals improves attendance, punctuality, concentration and overall health. By recognising excellence in this effort, the awards underscore how school nutrition empowers learners to thrive both in the classroom and beyond. The awards are a reminder that investing in nutrition is investing in the future. The Northern Cape's champions demonstrate how dedication, teamwork and care can transform schools into places where learners are not only fed but also nurtured to reach their full potential.
