Ladies and Gentlemen

In my capacity as Premier of this vast, beautiful and resource-laden Province of the Northern Cape, it gives me great pride and pleasure to say a few words at the official launch of Kalagadi Mine Project. In the same breath, I also welcome each and every one of you to this important occasion as I am certain that you will share in our joy of this wonderful initiative.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the promotion of economic growth and social development lies at the core of our ANC-led government’s responsibility to provide a better life for all, and the launch of the Kalagadi Mine, in essence, seeks to do just that.

In intending to contribute to the economic upliftment of the people of Kuruman and surrounding areas, we are mindful that one of the most important challenges for the Northern Cape is its historically very inequitable economic structure where relatively few people own most of the economic assets. It is our fervent desire as the ANC led government to lessen this inequality drastically. We want to feel and see job opportunities, real incomes and acceptable standards of living.

This initiative, Ladies and Gentlemen, will further unlock our Province’s mining sector potential and is aligned with our economic transformation and development goals.

It is also envisaged that the Kalagadi Manganese Mining launch will also enhance the economic competiveness of the province and will also play a critical role in poverty alleviation and job creation. We therefore encourage private sector investment in our drive to improve the lives of the people of the Northern Cape.

Ladies and Gentlemen, President Jacob Zuma has declared 2011 as the year of job creation and Kalagadi Manganese has embarked on a bold initiative to benefit both our province and country. With further initiatives like these, the economic liberation and advancement of the majority of South Africans will certainly become a reality.

Thank you

Patike
