World Food Day 16 October 2008

World Food Day will be commemorated in over 150 countries across the world on 16 October 2008. As part of the global community, the Northern Cape Department's of Agriculture and Land Reform, Education, Health and Social Development will form part of these global festivities. These departments will be commemorating World Food Day in Manyeding Village near Kuruman at 10h00. The aim is to heighten public awareness on the world food problem, with regard to challenges of climate change and to strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger.

The theme for this year's event is "World Food Security :The challenge of climate change and bio-energy". The Northern Cape government shall reflect on strides made in support of the global decision of combating hunger, malnutrition and reduction of poverty by 2015, as spelt out in the Millennium Development Goals.

Since the inception of the provincial Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Programme (IFSNP) in 2004, various projects throughout the province have been unveiled in support of food insecured communities. The deliverables included the distribution of; irrigation tools, seedlings, food parcels, food schemes at schools and clinics.

The Northern Cape Premier Ms. Dipuo Peters and other MEC's will officiate at the event.
