Summit to Advance Women in Rural Development

17 August 2010

As part of celebrating women’s month, the Department of Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development in the Northern Cape will be hosting a two day summit to Advance Women in Rural Development on the 17th-19 August 2010 in Douglas.

The aim of the summit is to give women in rural areas and farms an opportunity to state what their livelihoods are and how could government through its programmes of rural development improve their status.

It seeks to draft resolutions on each area identified by rural women and assist the department on how to implement the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme in the Pixley Ka Seme Rural Node. The summit will also create a platform to women in rural areas to be actively involved in helping to re-build the moral values in both rural and urban areas.

August month is been celebrated in South Africa to mark the contribution made by women of all races and ages, when they marched together to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. These women were marching in protest against the pass laws that restricted their movements in 1956. END
