Launch of New De-Aar Hospital

18 October 2010

The launch and official handover of the new De Aar Hospital is a significant indication of this Administration’s commitment to ensure services are delivered to the people of the Northern Cape.

The mood experienced by the community of Emthanjeni was echoed by the words of the Mayor, Councillor Markman, when he officially welcomed everyone present at the launch on 15 October 2010. He referred to the year 2010 as the year of excitement for the people of Emthanjeni.

In outlining the phased approach towards the project implementation of the hospital MEC Sokatsha re-emphasized the need for the community to maximize the opportunities that would be available through the building of the hospital.

He called on the community of Emthanjeni to take ownership of the project. This hospital will take place in two phases, which starts in October 2010, and will be implemented over a duration of three years.

Various cultural talents entertained and provided a jovial occasion to this exciting event. Before addressing the crowd the Premier Ms Hazel Jenkins joined in the celebration that has captured the entire community of Emthanjeni and the Pixley ka Seme District.

Premier Jenkins indicated that this launch highlighted a significant milestone in service delivery. She indicated the critical importance that the Constitution of our country places on the importance of treating the citizens with dignity. It is not only about the services that are being provided, but also about the infrastructure that is in place to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services. Premier highlighted that all the major health services that would be required by the people of the district will be provided through the new De Aar Hospital, because the hospital must be able to limit the load that is currently on the Kimberley Hospital Complex.

In encouraging community participation in the building of the hospital, she (Premier Jenkins) emphasized the importance of delivering quality service. She indicated that it is important that the service provided by the community must be of high standard. The hospital will also be responsible for addressing the various health challenges that the province is faced with. Premier Jenkins indicated that the major provincial health challenges are mainly tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS. She called on the community to ensure that they put in place preventative measures to help stopping the spread of TB and HIV/AIDS. She emphasized the message of government: “I am Responsible; We are Responsible; South Africa is taking Responsibility!”

Premier Jenkins called on the youth to access the various opportunities available within the health sector. She indicated that it has become time that our communities should be treated by their own when in need of service delivery. The new De Aar Hospital will also be equipped with staff accommodation.

Premier Jenkins and MEC Sokatsha then handed-over wheelchairs to beneficiaries of mainly the Thembelihle Municipality. The recipients were Mr. Frans Mkhosana and Mr. Hans Tier, who are both from Hopetown.
