Modern, Growing, Successful Province

Northern Cape Department of Health sends 28 Students to train as doctors in Cuba

In our continued effort to address the shortage of doctors in the Northern Cape Province, the MEC for Health, Mr Mac Jack accompanied by the Head of Department made an announcement during a sending-off ceremony held today, as part encouraging the successful students chosen to represent the Province well in the Cuban Medical Programme and as well as facilitating an orientation course for them.Alle Artikel For this year alone, the Department has awarded 28 bursaries for students to study medicine in Cuba, then (10) of those students will be on the 80 Cuban Scholarship and Eighteen (18) will be placed in the Expanded Cuban programme.

These students were selected from disadvantaged communities based on their history of active contribution to their communities and their potential to be caring doctors, as well as their creativity, initiative and commitment to serve the poorest of the poor upon completing their studies in Cuba.

All students led by the delegation of officials are set to leave during the course of next week to Cuba, as a part of making sure that students settle down well.

The Cuban Medical Programme is as a result of the exchange agreement between South Africa and Cuba which started in 1997 when the two countries signed-off a bilateral agreement.

In wishing the students well in their studies, MEC Mac Jack had this to say:

“Today is the beginning of a new journey towards becoming a doctor and what underpins this journey must be the commitment to succeed, most importantly to come back and serve your communities with pride.

You all have an opportunity of a life time that is fully funded and supported by the government to reach for your dreams. Our people are waiting patiently for you to come and restore their hope and dignity.”
