Editor’s Notes:

The National Reconciliation Day was adopted at the start of our democracy when it was envisioned that reconciliation, peace and stability would be a defining character of our new democratic dispensation.

The Government of National Unity, led by our late President Nelson Mandela, identified a day which would be dedicated to this ideal. The National Reconciliation Day encouraged the need to introduce, nurture and entrench new values in our society. It sought to rebuild the country that had been ravaged by apartheid.

National Reconciliation Day is therefore of even greater importance today as we strive to build a more cohesive society. Social cohesion is one of the priorities outlined in the National Development Plan and Government’s Medium-Term Strategic Framework 2014 - 2019.
