Northern Cape Provincial Sport Awards 2018

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will recognise sportsmen and women who have excelled in their various sporting codes. The recognition will take place during a prestigious event to be held at the Northern Cape Theatre in Kimberley on Thursday, 04 October 2018. It is aimed at honouring provincial sportsmen and women who have held the Northern Cape flag high. The ceremony will be celebrated under a theme “Today’s champions, tomorrow’s legends.”

The sport awards have been created to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field of play. The provincial leg follows 5 District Sport Awards (eliminations) where stronger contenders managed to secure their spots on the provincial event against nominees of Provincial Federations.

The district process secure more nominees per category as in the past and boost the Provincial Event with fairness of opportunity by all from all corners of the province who is now afforded the opportunity  to be recognized for their efforts during the period 01 April 2016 till 31 March 2017 ad 01 April 2017 till 31 March 2018. The district sport awards was coordinated by the District Sport Councils of the Northern Cape.

The nomination process has allowed various sporting federations, league clubs and other interested parties to nominate their preferred sporting personalities from 16 identified categories. The categories seeks to recognise individuals, males, females, people with disabilities, continental participants, federations, schools and community sport volunteers. They include awarding recognition to the Sport Star of the year, Sportsman and woman of the year, Sportsman and woman of the year with disability, Newcomer of the year, Coach of the year, Team of the year, Federation of the year, Administrator of the year, Volunteer of the year, Referee of the year, Stakeholder of the year, School Team of the year, Sport Journalist of the Year, Developing school team of the year as well as the School sport structure of the year. The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba will also take the opportunity to confer a special recognition to the athlete who has shown immense contribution towards sport development in the province.
