Northern Cape Provincial Women's Day Celebrations

The Northern Cape Provincial Government will celebrate the 2019 Provincial Women's Day in Mothibistad in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.  The day will be commemorated on Saturday, 10 August at Thabo Moorosi Multi Purpose Center in Mothibistad. This years’ annual commemoration will be held under the theme "25 Years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation”. Premier Dr. Zamani Saul is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. He will be accompanied by the Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bernice Sinxeve together with other Members of the Provincial Executive Council.

The month of August in South Africa is dedicated to the commemoration of 1956 Women’s March. The iconic march saw 20 000 women march to the Union Buildings to protest against the discriminatory pass laws. This march has been celebrated since 1995 as Women’s Day to recognize the important role played by women during the struggle for liberation against colonisation and apartheid.

This year’s annual commemoration coincides with the country’s celebration of 25 Years of Freedom and Democracy. Furthermore, this Women’s Month takes place alongside the 65th anniversary of the Founding Conference of the Federation of South African Women which adopted the 1954 Women’s Charter. The charter called for a society where “women do not form a society separate from the men and therefore share in the problems and anxieties of men and join hands with to remove social evils and obstacles to progress.

As part of advancing empowerment of women and fighting against the abuse of women and children , the Northern Cape Provincial Administration will be rolling out a number of programmes throughout the month of  August . The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will host a dialogue between professional women and grade 12 learners at Kalahari Museum in Upington. In an effort to continuously drive an agenda to build a better tomorrow ,

Government will host a programme with female inmates at Bougroep in the Frances Baard District while a beneficiary living with disability will receive a house in Wrenchville in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. Female entrepreneurs will be recognized during an award ceremony in De Aar in the Pixley ka Seme District while those in mining will be work shopped in the Gamagara municipal area in JTG District.

A programme to honour elderly women in Phillipstown will be held , as well as ensuring that women with disabilities are trained in bricklaying. A community dialogue and conversation on the role of women in protecting the rights of LGBTI will also be conducted.
