Modern, Growing, Successful Province

Launch of Terms of Reference for the Status of Youth

Inter- Generational Youth Dialogue : The role of the youth in changing History and its relevance today

The total population of the youth in the Northern Cape is 398 000 which constitutes 36 % of the provinces population. This high youth population cohort can create new economic growth opportunities if exploited efficiently by the province.

Whilst continuously benefiting from the opportunities of democracy, they too have a responsibility to build and shape their own destiny in order to live their full potential and build resistance to current and future socio-economic challenges. The high levels of youth unemployment, youth access to skills for the creation of decent jobs, HIV / AIDS, drugs and substance abuse, criminality, etc. form part of the key issues that the youth of today must confront.

Therefore responding to the challenge of youth development in South Africa, government must engage in a dialogue with the youth as it seeks to restore the hope of our youth in the future, and in their capacity to channel their resourcefulness and energy into reconstruction and development

This dialogue under the auspices of the Department of Social Development will be taking place as forth

Date : 10 September 2012
Venue : Protea Hotel Big Hole
Time : 11h00

These engagements will form part of a series of dialogues ranging from Inter-Generational dialogues about the role played by the various age cohorts, namely the youth of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and the role of the so called born frees (post 1994 youth). These engagements will be lead by the MEC for Social Development Mr. Alvin Botes.

The aim of these dialogues will be to enable young people to learn from their fore bears, whilst they learn to promote the spirit of nation-building by inculcating a sense of collective responsibility for the creation of a common appreciation of nationhood.

The last research report into the Status of the Northern Cape Youth was 2001 and in order to allow government and its social partners to have a more detailed and definitive information on youth , research on the status of youth has been commissioned. The terms of reference for the research report will also be announced by MEC Alvin Botes on Monday 10 September 2012 at the dialogues.
